Introduction
Welcome! This library web site accompanies the course HY 430 European Social and Cultural History during the Long Nineteenth Century. Like the course content, this site covers topics such as fashion, gender, race, class, material culture, literature, the arts, and other cultural topics.
The Long Nineteenth Century saw a flowering of culture in Europe, and you may find that you need to use textual documents as well as art, literature, music, newspaper ads, artifacts, and other items as sources. Please use the red tabs above to navigate to primary and secondary sources.
Please remember this age-old technique for discovering primary sources: find secondary sources on your topic and look in their bibliographies for primary sources.
At any time please contact Brett Spencer, History Librarian, (205) 348-1200, dbspence@ua.edu for questions or research appointments in Gorgas Library. If you need help with research but cannot reach Brett in time, please call the Information Desk at (205) 348-6047 or ask for help at the Information Desk on the first floor of Gorgas Library.
Congratulations on being accepted into this seminar! Creating a major research paper will not only help you uncover the history of a fascinating period, but also help you learn searching and writing skills that will put you firmly on the path to becoming a scholar. Please let us know however we can help!
