Our Civil War collections include first-hand accounts from North and South, covering more than a dozen states. They reflect ranks from Private to Brigadier General, and service in Army artillery, cavalry and infantry units; on Navy vessels; and in hospitals. Among these are the diaries of 6 Confederate and 10 Union soldiers and sailors, providing a sustained, day-by-day look at military life during the war.
