An Introduction to Time-Varying Effect Modeling (TVEM)

Regression estimates the association between variables with the assumption that these variables are static and not changing over time. However, that is not always the case in real life. How to model a variable’s trajectory that is changing over time? How to understand the fluctuation in association between two variables across time? Time-varying effect modeling (TVEM), an extension of linear regression, can be a way that additionally accounts for the time dimension without making assumptions about the shape of the trajectory (e.g. curve, linear, etc). TVEM is a tool can be used with a broad variety of data types, such as cross-sectional data, historical data, and intensive longitudinal data.

In this workshop, you will learn about:

  1. The conceptualization of TVEM
  2. Data requirement for TVEM
  3. New research questions can be examined by using TVEM
  4. How to conduct TVEM in SAS through a step-by-step example

About the Instructor:

Dr. Mengya Xia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at The University of Alabama. She received her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from The Pennsylvania State University. Her methodological expertise includes mixture modeling, time-varying effect modeling, multilevel modeling, structural equation modeling, and dynamic system modeling. Her substantive work focuses on the transactional dynamic process between complex family systems and adolescent positive development.
