Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Geographic Information Systems are one of the most powerful visualization tools. This guide covers access to these software, how to learn about GIS, and geospatial data sources.

Historical aerial photographs can be an excellent way to learn about change. With flights sometimes going back to the 1930s, these collections provide valuable long-term records of the earth. A common misconception is that these photographs are low quality and not worth using, but most of them are clear enough you can see trees, roads, buildings, and sometimes cars!

View these photographs in a guided StoryMap, compare in an Online Application, or use them yourself in ArcGIS Online. View the Aerial Photograph collection at the Map Library or on AlabamaMaps.com.

ArcGIS Business Analyst toolbox has several data analytic tools specifically designed to provide businesses insight. Additionally, with many data layers available through ArcGIS Online, you can also provide context to your data to make better decisions. This StoryMap serves as an example of an assignment teaching students about business data analytics, but also about data literacy. View the StoryMap or learn how to make it through Esri Academy (free with your UA ArcGIS Login).
