Reviews and Self Study
Advanced Organic Chemistry Part A: Structure and Mechanisms
Great organic chemistry text with many references to primary literature. This is a very readable reference book (Both Part A and B) if you already have some knowledge of organic chemistry.
Advanced Organic Chemistry Part B: Reactions and Synthesis
Provides a great discussion of important organic reactions including descriptions of mechanisms, stereochemistry, and reaction conditions. Part B also includes many references to the primary literature.
March’s Advanced Organic Chemistry
Another excellent organic chemistry text with a focus on reactions, mechanisms, and structure. Includes many references to primary literature including checked reactions from Organic Syntheses. N.B. contains a section in Appendix A about Literature resources in organic chemistry.
The Art of Writing Reasonable Organic Reaction Mechanisms
Teach yourself how to write reaction mechanisms.
Other Selected Reference Books
Provides general physical properties and analytical uses for reagent chemicals as well as guidelines for standard analytical methods. Purity specifications for reagent chemicals and standard-grade reference materials.
The Manipulation of Air-Sensitive Compounds
Key resource for safely handling chemicals under inert atmosphere.
Comprehensive Organic Functional Group Transformations
Comprehensive Organic Functional Group Transformations II
Both of these text are arranged by number of attached non-carbon atoms. Version II is available online through Knovel.
Comprehensive Organic Transformations: A Guide to Functional Group Preparations
Arranged by bond order/functional group and then transformation. I find this text easy to browse.
Greene’s Protective Groups in Organic Synthesis
Organized by group to be protected including deprotection conditions.
Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis
Named reactions in organic synthesis with reaction mechanisms and references to primary literature.
