“Start Here” (Home) Page: Layout

What the Guidelines & Best Practices Say

  • Descriptions should clarify the focus of guide.
  • Home Page must be a three column layout. 
  • The first top-level page should be labeled “Start Here”.  (See more at “Tabs and Their Use” below).
  • Right-hand column consists of, starting from the top:
    1. “Welcome” box (May also include explanation or introduction to the guide.) [ OPTIONAL, STRONGLY ENCOURAGED ]
    2. “Feedback” box (From repository) [ REQUIRED ]
  • Center column consists of, starting from the top:
    1. “Guide Contents” box (List of top-level pages used in the LibGuide with brief descriptions and links to  each top-level page) [ REQUIRED ]
    2. “Best Bets” box (Three to five key resources with links and descriptions] [ OPTIONAL  ]
  • Left-hand column consists of, starting from the top [ ALL REQUIRED ]
    1. “Ask Me” box (See below.)
    2. “Ask a Librarian” box (See below.)
    3. “Contact Us”

What the Guidelines & Best Practices Say

  • Profile box should be labeled “Ask Me.”
  • The Ask Me box should appear only on the “Start Here” page of a guide. The Task Force later decided that a guide author may include the Ask Me box on interior pages, provided the following order is observed:
    • Profile/Ask Me
    • Ask a Librarian
    • Contact Us
    • any additional content
  • The Ask Me box must include office number, email address, title, and phone number and a photo.
  • Photo size should be 130 by 130 pixels. Contact the LibGuides Administrator with any questions.
